pull aside (type 2)

(take someone apart from a group to talk to him or her privately)

I must pull James aside. I want to talk about a surprise for Julia.

The boss pulled her aside and asked her for her opinion.

suss out (type 2)

(try to understand a situation or person)

She has already sussed him out.

dumb down (type 2)
