(pay money, often when you don't want to)

I'm irritated because I had to fork out for a new computer last week. 

I got a parking ticket last week and had to fork out for nothing.

(help progress more quickly or easily)

They got a private teacher to help their daughter's maths along.

I will finish this work faster if you help things along.

(become or make someone become more lively or cheerful)

I'm just tired. A cup of coffee will perk me up. 

Visits from her grandchildren always perk Julie up. 


39. spring up (type 1 / intransitive)

(appear or grow suddenly)

Every year, the vegetables in the garden spring up again. 

Flowers always spring up after it rains. 


40. stave off (type 2 / transitive and separable)

(prevent or delay something bad)

I'm staying inside because I'm trying to stave a cold off. 

We tried to stave paying the bill off for as long as possible.
