Lesson 4: Present perfect or present perfect continuous?
We use the present perfect simple:
- For life experience
- For 'how long' with stative verbs and work / live / study
- For recent things with just / yet / already
- For recent things that are completely finished with a present result
We use the present perfect continuous:
- For 'how long' with for and since, except with stative verbs
- For recent things that are not completely finished with a present result
- For continuous actions with a present result
Lesson Summary
The present perfect simple is used for:
- Life experience, referring to things that happened in the past without specifying when, like "I've been to Mexico."
- Expressing duration with stative verbs and verbs like work, live, and study, such as "I've lived here for 10 years."
- Describing recent things using just, yet, and already.
- Discussing recent finished actions with a present result, such as "I've lost my keys, could you help me find them?"
On the other hand, the present perfect continuous is used for:
- Stating duration with for and since, except for stative verbs.
- Referring to recent unfinished actions with a present result, like "I've been waiting here for two hours."
- Denoting continuous actions that have recently stopped but still have a present result, such as "I've been running."
